Zanzibar has a rich and storied history in the worldwide spice trade. Earlier today, I took a Spice Tour. Our group was taken to a spice plantation north of Stone Town, and the diversity of plants was amazing.
On this plantation, we saw and sampled the following items:
- Turmeric
- Aloe Vera
- Avocado
- Cinnamon
- Lemongrass
- Clove
- Black, Red, Brown & White Pepper
- Nutmeg
- Breadfruit
- Jackfruit
- Starfruit
- Coconut
- Vanilla
- Chili Peppers
- Casavas
- Limes
One of the guides sampling jackfruit for us.
Starfruit.
Nutmeg in raw form.
One of our guides climbed a coconut tree to provide us something to drink.
One one of our guides made sure we were dressed to the nines using palm fronds.
While I didn’t have high expectations for the tour, I was pleasantly surprised.
And one last great thought, seen in Mercury’s Restaurant:
Hi John, so nice to meet you earlier on the spice tour. Hope your travels to the beach went smoothly and we will be looking forward to reading about your onward journey. Take care, Laura and Loren from Seattle
Laura! Wonderful to meet you and Loren! I enjoyed sharing that “spicey” tour with you. I look forward to staying in touch.
